What is the obesity crisis costing your business?

Nearly 40% of under-25s who have weight-loss surgery in the UK are classified as super-obese, according to new figures (The UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry). The report also mentioned that the number of people with obesity in the UK has more than trebled in the last 25 years. Doctors now say that the condition is reaching ‘epidemic’ proportions and the figures are not showing signs of abating anytime soon.

Potential effects of Obesity

Studies have consistently shown that obesity-related conditions include heart disease/ failure, Type 2 Diabetes, musculo skeletal disorders, depression, stroke and certain types of cancer. These are unquestionably some of the leading causes of avoidable premature and preventable death.

Preventative measures

Behavioural changes are seen as key elements to a successful regime of a weight loss programme. Researchers believe that it is difficult for individuals to stay motivated but partaking in some physical activity and a weight watching programme is better than nothing.

The old adage that a healthy workforce is a happy work force rings true. Fit and healthy employees are an essential mix for an efficient and profitable company. By creating an environment that enables employees to make healthy options about food intake, exercise, and other healthier lifestyle initiatives, employers are not only meeting their corporate social responsibility but also have a more engaged and effective workforce.

There is also an ever increasing pressure that employers need to do more for their employees by addressing the health and wellbeing agenda. This consists of cost effective, well structured and well defined workplace health programmes for employees. The return on investment for companies who have made these positive changes have reaped benefits in improved engagement and productivity of their employees.
